How to calculate number of bricks in a wall??

Karthik Marripoodi

Since brick/blocks are available in various sizes, I will mention the procedure to calculate the number of bricks required.

1. Calculate the volume of brick work to be done (i.e., length of wall X height of wall X the thickness of block/brick work to be done). Say 100 sqft of 100 mm thick wall needs to be done (i.e, 10 cum)
2. Now deduct the volume of mortar used in the brick/block work. The percentage to be deducted actually depends on the brick/block size that you are using. This varies between 15-25%. Or you can manually calculate it by considering 10 mm thick mortar between each brick layer and sides.
3. Now deduct this volume from the total volume.
4. Calculate the volume of brick/block. Divide the total volume by the volume of brick/block.

If you are considering standard red clay brick, then 1 cum of brickwork requires 500 bricks.
